Umea University, Department for Language Studies, Umea

Umea University is a comprehensive university with 33,000 students. Its Department of Language Studies is its core centre of literacy research and teacher training in the areas of kindergarten, primary and secondary schools. Furthermore, this department leads the university's in-service teacher training courses with regard to literacy. Staff members are also actively involved in curriculum development in the areas of literacy. We are currently developing the core curriculum for literacy within a new Masters Programme for teachers who want to focus on students with reading and writing difficulties.

In the field of adolescent literacy, we conduct research in the areas of reading, writing, lexical development and new illiteracies. Many of the scientists have been practitioners before the PhD which means that they are competent in action research and developing of methods. In addition, staff members frequently act as consultants for the Swedish National Agency for Education.
